Motherhood isn’t easy. God loves and supports mothers. Mary, the mother of Jesus, prays for mothers. Here are some helpful tips to make sure you’re approaching motherhood in a spiritual and faith-filled way.
- Love - Being a loving mother might seem obvious, but there are some situations might make it difficult to speak or act lovingly. When speaking to your child, remember you are a major influence in their lives. You can speak to them and love them.
- No Swearing - Swearing at or to someone isn’t very loving or nice. No matter how angry you feel, try not to swear. You’ll feel better about yourself too. If you really step back and think about what the words mean, you’ll realize what you’re saying is far from loving.
- Humor - Humor is great for any relationship. Sometimes you’ll just have to sit back and laugh. Children also like laughing. Treasure the sound of their laughter.
- Kindness - A kind mother is a joy. Someone who knows when you’re feeling low and wants to help you feel better. A mother should be kind to her child.
- Prayer - Praying alone and with children is a good thing for a mother to do. Prayer gives you strength, courage, and a soft place to fall when you feel stressed. Praying opens up a two way conversation with God. He does love and care about you.
- Education - Mothers teach their children millions of things during a lifetime. Along with academic and relationship skills, teach them about God. Teach them about their religion and why it’s so great to believe.
- Go to Church - Attend Mass every Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation with your children. Set an example to your children that Mass and God are important to you. Make Mass a priorty.
- Take care of your marriage - The best way you can nurture your children is to take care of your marriage. Children thrive on a happy household with a father and mother. Don’t forget that you are a wife and that is a very important role.
- Take care of yourself - To be a good person to anyone, take care of your health and mind. Take 10 minutes a day to enjoy yourself and have some alone time. You can even spend five minutes with God.
- Join a Group - Join a group of Catholic women and/or mothers who can support you and you can give ideas too. This group might be a great source of friendship.
- Teach the Mass - Have a mock Mass at home to teach children about what is going to happen during the real Mass. You can teach them the times to be real quiet and have them practice.
- Teach Participation - Teach children essential prayers that they can say during Mass with everyone else. Participation is a great thing to learn especially during Mass.
- Stop Yelling - Constantly yelling at children isn’t an ideal situation. Step back and think about why you’re yelling. Are you frustrated about yourself? Yelling might be needed in extreme circumstances, but why yell constantly?
- Role Models - Use Mary as a role model to motherhood. Ask her for advice, wisdom, and prayers.
